Did you know that 83% of old IT equipment still contains discoverable data?
What is hard drive destruction?
Hard drive destruction is the physical, mechanical elimination of data storage media. Unlike certified data wiping, which erases data electronically while preserving the device, hard drive shredding physically destroys the drive, making data recovery impossible even with specialist forensic tools.
Your organisation needs physical hard drive destruction when:
Your internal data security policy mandates physical destruction of storage media
Drives are too old, damaged or degraded to wipe reliably
You are decommissioning a data centre or server room with high-sensitivity data
You operate in a sector where physical destruction is a compliance or contractual requirement (defence, government, financial services)
You require the highest possible level of assurance that data cannot be recovered under any circumstances
On-site vs off-site destruction
Off-site destruction (standard)
Drives are collected from your site in tamper-evident, sealed containers via GPS-tracked, secure vehicles. Assets are logged at serial number at point of collection and transported directly to Ego’s secure processing facility in Bradford. Destruction is carried out under controlled conditions. Certificates of Destruction are issued on completion.
On-site hard drive destruction
For organisations where media must not leave the premises, government-classified environments, defence contractors or ultra-high-security sites, Ego provides on-site hard drive shredding using specialist destruction equipment brought to your location. Destruction happens in your presence. Certificates are issued immediately on completion.
Shred sizes and security levels
Different data classification levels require different shred sizes. Ego provides multiple shred sizes to match your organisation’s security policy:
Standard shred
For general business, commercial and public sector data
High-security shred
Smaller particle size for sensitive, confidential or restricted data
Ultra-secure shred
For the highest classification levels, aligned to government and defence standards
If you are unsure which shred size your policy requires, our team can advise
Precious material recovery after destruction
Shredded materials are not sent to landfill. All metal components, circuit elements and materials recovered from destroyed drives enter Ego’s downstream WEEE recycling and material recovery process. Rare earth elements and critical materials are recovered wherever technically viable. This is part of Ego’s zero-to-landfill commitment. The destruction of the media and the recovery of the materials are both documented, providing the ESG reporting data many organisations need to support Scope 3 carbon reporting.
Bulk destruction of hard drives
We manage high-volume hard drive destruction programmes for businesses, public sector bodies and data centre operators. Whether you have 100 drives from a desktop refresh or 10,000 drives from a server room decommission, the same process, documentation standard and chain-of-custody discipline applies.
For data centre and large-scale server decommissioning programmes, see our data centre decommissioning services.

Frequently asked
questions
Do you offer on-site hard drive shredding for businesses in the UK?
Yes, Ego Technology provides on-site hard drive shredding across the UK, bringing specialist destruction equipment directly to your premises. Assets are destroyed in your presence, and Certificates of Destruction are issued on the day. Off-site hard drive shredding at Ego’s secure facilities is also available for standard and high-volume programmes.
What is the difference between hard drive shredding and data wiping?
Data wiping uses certified software to permanently erase data while preserving the drive for reuse. Hard drive shredding physically destroys the media, making recovery impossible regardless of the tools applied. Both methods result in formal certification. Data wiping is appropriate where devices will be reused or remarketed. Physical shredding is required where your policy mandates physical destruction or where media cannot be reliably wiped.
How should a large company destroy data on old computers?
Large organisations should use a professional provider capable of managing volume programmes with a fully documented chain of custody. For computers where physical destruction is required, Ego Technology provides secure collection, hard drive extraction, mechanical shredding and serial-level Certificates of Destruction. For devices being reused, certified data wiping is available as an alternative. Both approaches support GDPR compliance.
What certificate do I receive after hard drive shredding?
Ego Technology issues a Certificate of Destruction confirming the destruction of each individual drive, recorded at serial number or asset reference level. The certificate confirms the destruction method used, the date and time of destruction, the shred size applied and the authorising technician. This is the document used to demonstrate compliance in an audit.
What happens to the shredded material after hard drive destruction?
Shredded material does not go to landfill. All materials recovered from destroyed drives (metals, circuit components and rare earth elements where viable) enter Ego’s downstream WEEE recycling and material recovery process. A zero-to-landfill outcome applies to every project. Environmental reporting data is available to support ESG and Scope 3 carbon reporting.
Can you handle large volumes of hard drives across multiple sites?
Yes. Ego Technology manages high-volume hard drive destruction programmes across single sites, regional estates and national multi-site operations. All assets are collected under a secure chain of custody, logged at serial level and processed under the same destruction standard regardless of volume or number of locations.
